Over the course of the past few months, European music producer Zedd and Selena Gomez have been teasing the media on many fronts: their rumored budding relationship, and their upcoming music ventures. Selena Gomez has been posting incredibly cryptic photos and captions on her Instagram account, hinting not only at a potential blossoming relationship, but also at a possible new song, tagging each photo with the hashtag #IWantYouToKnow, or some variation of it. Since marking her departure from Hollywood Records with her greatest hits album, For You, and signing on with Interscope Records, Gomez’s musical comeback has been greatly anticipated.
Today, finally, Selena Gomez released her latest single, “I Want You To Know,” with Zedd, and with the anticipation that has been building up over the past few months, this new track does not disappoint. With each new musical venture, Gomez has done an exceptional job keeping the attention of the music industry by proving her versatility in genres, vocal ability, and lyrical content. From the Pop/Rock sound of her freshman album, Kiss and Tell, to her darker dubstep-influenced dance solo record, Stars Dance, Selena Gomez has always kept her music career fresh, and there is absolutely no doubt that this new track will continue to do so.
Her last studio album, Stars Dance, marked a departure from her cookie-cutter Disney image, and her entrance into womanhood with more mature lyrics and club-friendly music. The single released from her greatest hits album, For You, entitled “The Heart Wants What It Wants” showed a vulnerable Gomez, giving her fans and the media an honest recount of a tumultuous past, namely her turbulent relationship with Justin Bieber, and the repercussions it had taken on her life. Upon leaving her record label, Hollywood Records, Gomez bid adieu to the company that helped her springboard her career, a deviation serving as representation of her departure from that chaotic part of her life, enabling her to smoothly start a new chapter of her life. “I Want You To Know” does precisely this, as it is her way of showing the world that despite the multitude of negative things that have occurred over the past few years, she is coming out of it a stronger, confident woman. The song is a sonic and lyrical representation that she can have fun again, and she can be happy again.
The song itself, produced by famous German-Russian producer Zedd, and co-written by One Republic frontman Ryan Tedder, is most definitely a club and radio friendly track, hugely synth-heavy, and not to mention incredibly catchy. Unlike many of the pop songs that are played over the radiowaves nowadays, “I Want You To Know” contains the perfect bass drop to vocal ratio, and does not abuse Gomez’s vocals with over-production. The track sounds like an actual song, and not like a hastily made remix of an already mediocre song. What’s more magnificent about the track is that you can almost hear the untouchable chemistry of Zedd and Gomez in the song that you can clearly see of the two in Gomez’s Instagram photos. With the combined success of Selena Gomez and Zedd (which, believe it or not, includes a track he did for Justin Bieber) there is absolutely no doubt that anything that is spawned from the duo (musically) will be just as beautiful as this new track. If any of the songs that the two have done together for Selena Gomez’s upcoming studio album so far sound anything like “I Want You To Know,” I am all for it.
